[applause] Andy Burnham arrived at 10 Downing Street, swiftly taking office after the Labor Party rallied around him. [cheering] Party officials hoping he can stay in power longer than many of his predecessors. >> Britain needs to show the world that we can regain our stability once again. Over the past decade, the only real constant on Doubting Street has been Larry the Cat, who like the rest of the UK is now seeing his seventh prime minister in 10 years. >> Thank you very much everybody. >> Kier Starmer was pressured to resign after his popularity plummeted, but Burnham is seen as more charismatic. He was wellliked during his nine years as mayor of Manchester, but now he will be steering an entire country. >> I think there's quite a bit of still uncertainty. You know, we don't know what he's bringing on board. >> I think he does need to hold an election. We do need, you know, we do need prime ministers who have a mandate. >> So, how many people? >> But Bham says he will waste no time getting down to business. He visited a homeless shelter just before his audience with King Charles. and later in the day made changes to cabinet. >> Although we haven't had a lot of policy specifics, he's set out some very obvious themes. He wants to deal with cost of living. He wants >> This political analyst says that Starmer spent much of his time in office dealing with international issues. Everything from the war in Ukraine to trying to manage the UK's relationship with Donald Trump. It's going to be a challenge because when you sort of want to tell a story of a government that's really focused on day-to-day economics, but you have this constant pull to focus on the big broad global issues. One of Burnham's first calls was with the US president, and he invited Donald Trump to come and visit Manchester. Other world leaders congratulated Burnham, too, including Prime Minister Mark Carney.
